Hemorrhoid Treatment
Treatment Options for External Hemorrhoids:
While most external hemorrhoids resolve spontaneously, various treatments can alleviate pain, itching, and swelling. These include:
- Creams, ointments, and suppositories: Products containing lidocaine, hydrocortisone, or witch hazel can numb the area and reduce inflammation. However, using these for more than a week without doctor approval is discouraged. If symptoms persist or side effects like rash or dry skin occur, consult your doctor.
- Surgical procedures: In cases where other approaches prove ineffective or large hemorrhoids are present, surgery might be recommended. Two common surgical options include:
- Hemorrhoidectomy: This procedure removes external hemorrhoids and is highly effective for large or recurring hemorrhoids. While generally straightforward, recovery can take 2-8 weeks. Pain typically subsides within 2 weeks, but strenuous activities may need to be restricted for 6-8 weeks. Some surgeons use electrothermal devices for this surgery, leading to faster healing and reduced pain in certain cases.
- Hemorrhoidopexy: This procedure specifically targets internal hemorrhoids by stapling them, cutting off blood flow and repositioning prolapsed tissue. While recovery is typically faster and less painful than hemorrhoidectomy, there's a higher risk of recurrence or rectal prolapse (protrusion of the rectum).
